DETROIT (AP) - Water department crews and Detroit firefighters will inspect and repair hydrants to make sure they are working ahead of the three-day Halloween period known as Angels’ Night.

Inspections are expected to start Tuesday afternoon on the city’s northwest side.

The work is part of Detroit’s ongoing fight to reduce the number of intentionally set fires beginning the night before Halloween that once was called Devil’s Night.

In 1984, Detroit had more than 800 fires during the period. Last year, 95 were reported.

The three-day period is now called Angels’ Night and features block-by-block patrols of city neighborhoods by thousands of volunteers to prevent fires.

Vacant houses, buildings and garages have been targeted by arsonists in past years.
