TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The Tulsa Police Department’s Organized Gang Unit says it has recovered 177 firearms - including high powered rifles - since January.

The department’s unit has been working under a grant from the attorney general’s office, which has allowed the unit to focus on taking firearms out of the hands of known gang members.

The unit recovered 138 firearms last year. The unit’s previous high came in 2009, when it recovered 163 firearms.

The grant money is earmarked specifically for fighting criminal street gangs and targeting other violent offenders.
