CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - A Wyoming Highway Patrol K-9 who had been on the job for about two months was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in southeastern Wyoming.

The patrol says K-9 “Robbie” was assisting Trooper Dave Chatfield with a vehicle search east of Elk Mountain at about 6 p.m. Sunday. After searching inside the vehicle, the dog walked into the road where it was struck by a semi that had moved to the far left lane of travel.

Robbie, a Springer Spaniel, died at the scene.

The patrol says the semi driver did not break any laws.

Trooper Chatfield and Robbie began training together in July and started patrolling in August. Robbie was trained to detect drugs.
