NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - Hundreds of people gathered at a community meeting Monday night in Newport to contest the Coast Guard decision to close its air station there and to center helicopter operations at North Bend - an hour away.

Some said adding an hour to a rescue would be a death sentence in the cold Oregon waters.

KPTV reports (https://bit.ly/1oq4XBX ) Coast Guard Rear Admiral R.T. Gromlich told the crowd the decision to close the Newport air station was made at the highest levels of government.

The station will be closed at the end of November in a budget move. The Coast Guard will still have a present in Newport and respond to emergencies.
