INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana’s unemployment rate fell for a second straight month during September - dropping by 0.1 percent to 5.7 percent - despite an overall loss in private sector jobs.

The jobs reports released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state’s unemployment rate now has declined in 16 of the past 22 months. Indiana’s September rate compared with 5.9 percent unemployment for the nation.

The report says the state added 5,900 manufacturing jobs in September in one of the largest one-month increases for Indiana in that sector in a decade and one of the largest in the nation. However, losses concentrated mainly in leisure and hospitality and in trade, transportation and utilities resulted in an overall decline of 1,900 private sector jobs last month.
