HOPEWELL, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police are investigating a possible link between a fatal shooting by police of a man in Hopewell and the body of his wife found in a motel in Colonial Heights.

Authorities announced Tuesday that 54-year-old Gary E. Lee was fatally shot Monday after an encounter with Hopewell police.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said in a news release that the man was shot after he began making “threatening gestures toward the officers” following more than an hour of attempted negotiations.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1ygiigl) that discovered the body of 53-year-old Carol E. Lee at a motel in Colonial Heights. Investigators said the motel served as the couple’s residence.

Three Hopewell police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
