NEPTUNE, N.J. (AP) - Attempted murder charges have been filed against a man who allegedly shot and critically wounded a woman insider her central New Jersey apartment this week.

Monmouth County prosecutors say 22-year-old Diquan Speights, of Asbury Park, is also charged with burglary and weapons offenses stemming from Monday’s shooting in Neptune. His bail was set Tuesday at $650,000 and it was not known if he had retained an attorney.

Prosecutors say Speights was armed with a handgun when he forcibly entered the apartment around 4:30 a.m. Monday. He encountered the woman inside the apartment and allegedly shot her before fleeing.

The 22-year-old victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

If convicted on all counts, Speights would face several decades in state prison.
