GARY, Ind. (AP) - Gary police say the mother of one of the women found slain in the city had filed a missing persons report in January.

Gary police provided a copy of the report on Teaira Batey to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Forty-three-year-old Darren Vann has confessed to strangling one woman and has told police where to find six more bodies, including Batey’s. The 28-year-old’s body was found in an abandoned Gary home.

The report filed on Jan. 29 says Batey had been missing for three weeks. It says she left with a male friend, then never returned. The report also cites the mother as saying her daughter suffered from schizophrenia.

Police spokesman Tom Decanter says investigators in the Vann case are going through about 70 missing person reports filed since 2010.
