SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say two northeast Ohio police officers are on paid leave after an officer shot and killed a man a man who refused to drop a butcher knife while attacking his girlfriend.

The shooting occurred early Saturday in the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid. Officials say an officer shot 44-year-old Ronnie McNary of Cleveland twice after McNary refused the officers’ orders to drop the knife. McNary died at a hospital a short time later. Police officials have not identified the officer who shot McNary.

The 47-year-old girlfriend was treated for cuts and other injuries. She told police she had kicked McNary out of the house Friday night because she thought he was using drugs, and that he broke into the house before the attack.
