SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A 37-year-old man has been identified as the burglary suspect who was fatally shot by Southaven police Saturday.

DeSoto County Coroner Jeff Pounders tells The Commercial Appeal (https://bit.ly/1w1Xdbs ) the man was Timothy Rook, whose hometown was not known.

Police Chief Tom Long says a suspect was spotted leaving a home Saturday where a burglary had been reported. Long says an officer pulled over a car that fit the description of the vehicle involved in the possible burglary.

Long says a woman in the car with the suspect left the vehicle. He says the man was armed, shots were fired and the man was hit and died at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Long says the officer involved is on “light duty” pending the investigation’s results. Police have not identified the officer.
