HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - Hamden police say the shooting death of a 56-year-old man by a visitor who knocked on his door was not random.

Police Capt. Ronald Smith said the victim, Larry Dildy, was shot and possibly stabbed during an argument Sunday.

A family member tried to help him, hitting the attacker with a broomstick. The attacker fled and remained at large Monday.

Smith says it’s not known if the attacker was invited into Dildy’s home or forced his way inside. He says that after entering the home, an argument between Dildy and the attacker ensued, followed by a physical altercation.

Dildy died in surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
