MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis police say a student showing off a gun to classmates at a middle school accidentally shot himself.

The Commercial Appeal reported (https://bit.ly/1nxTvDj ) that the 13-year-old had the gun in a backpack Tuesday morning and dropped it, causing the weapon to discharge. Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph says the student at A. Maceo Walker Middle School was struck in the leg.

Rudolph says the student was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and is in non-critical condition.

Memphis police issued a juvenile summons to the child’s mother.

Shelby County Schools officials are on the scene and say school is still in session.
