GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - A Grand Valley man has been sentenced to five years in prison for neglecting his mother so severely authorities say her life was in danger.

Mesa County District Judge Thomas Deister on Monday sentenced Keith Rohracker to one year less than the maximum for his actions that allowed his mother to live in filth so great that nurses accustomed to dealing with neglect were shocked.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports (https://tinyurl.com/pdvsfoz ) the only reason the judge didn’t sentence Rohracker to the full time in prison was because his mother survived.

Relatives say the woman has gained weight and is recovering.

A jury found Rohracker guilty of one felony count of serious bodily injury to an at-risk adult by negligence and a misdemeanor count of neglect of an at-risk adult.
