MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Labor says the state’s unemployment rate increased in September to 4.4 percent, an increase of three-tenths of one percent over August.

It was the fourth monthly increase in Vermont’s unemployment rate, but the department says Vermont state has the fifth lowest unemployment rate in the country.

The unemployment rate in September 2013 was 4.5 percent. The comparable national rate was 5.9 percent.

Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan says the rate is similar to last year, when unemployment increased in the late summer and early fall before trending down again.

Noonan says that in the last year, Vermont has added 1,500 private sector jobs.

Unemployment in Vermont’s 17 labor markets ranged from a low of 3 percent in Woodstock to 5.2 percent in Newport.
