WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts authorities say a Boston-area man wanted in the beating death of his mother has been arrested in North Carolina.

Forty-six-year-old Matthew McAveeney is charged with murder in the killing of 70-year-old Barbara McAveeney. Her body was found Oct. 14 in her condominium in Winchester, a suburb northwest of Boston.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Winchester Police Chief Kenneth Albertelli said police in Belmont, North Carolina, arrested McAveeney in a store parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

He is expected to appear in Gaston County District Court on Wednesday on a fugitive charge.

Prosecutors upgraded the charge against him in an arrest warrant issued Monday. He had previously faced charges including armed assault with intent to murder.

The medical examiner determined the cause of Barbara McAveeney’s death was blunt force trauma to the head.
