MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) - State and local fire marshals are investigating how two men died in a house fire in Muscle Shoals.

The Monday night fire claimed the lives of John Jones and Arthur King, both 70, authorities said.

Muscle Shoals firefighters arrived shortly before 10 p.m. Monday to find flames shooting through the roof of the house on Lafayette Street, WHNT-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1uErCqH ).

A firefighter was able to get into the burning home to pull King from the flames, authorities said.

“One of our lieutenants was able to reach the front door, saw a victim laying inside the living room,” said Donald Ray Coons, a Muscle Shoals fire marshal. “They were able to get him out. He was unresponsive at the time, but they were able to get him back in the ambulance.”

King was taken to UAB Hospital. The Colbert County coroner said he later died of his injuries.

Officials said Jones was found dead, lying in a bathtub.

Donald Ray Coons, a Muscle Shoals Fire Marshal, said the blaze is believed to have started in a utility room. It quickly spread to the attic.
