CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Kanawha County student faces charges after an unloaded handgun was found in the pocket of his jacket.

Charleston Police Sgt. Paul Perdue says the 16-year-old George Washington High School sophomore is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a gun on school property.

The student also will face an expulsion hearing.

Perdue tells media outlets that the school’s prevention resource officer detained the teenager after another student reporting seeing the .380-caliber handgun.

Perdue says the student has a pre-existing mental health condition. He was taken to Highland Hospital.

The school didn’t go into lockdown. Perdue says the student wasn’t brandishing the weapon and no bullets were found.
