BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a rash of larcenies at several cemeteries in western New York.

New York State Police and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office say almost 400 U.S. American Legion flag holders from cemeteries in the Byron-Bergen region of Genesee County are missing.

The flag holders were discovered missing over the weekend, and it’s not known when the thefts occurred.

Each flag holder has a 5-inch, 1-pound bronze medallion with the words “AMERICAN LEGION” in an outer circle and a star with “US” in the inner circle. The medallion is held up with a 20-inch metal stake with an arrow at its base.

Replacement value of each flag holder is approximately $32.

Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at (585) 344-6200 or the sheriff’s office (585) 343-5000.
