NEW YORK (AP) - New York City wants more students in poor neighborhoods to apply to its gifted programs.

The Daily News (https://nydn.us/10meoax ) says the city Education Department has mailed 28,000 postcards with information on how to apply to gifted kindergarten programs to families in the Bronx and Brooklyn.

The agency says the effort is designed to increase diversity in the special classrooms.

Spokeswoman Devora Kaye says the agency believes every child deserves the best opportunity to succeed no matter what zip code they live in.
