DENVER (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez edited a campaign television ad after the widow of Colorado’s former director of corrections asked him to stop referencing her husband’s death.

The ad criticizes the administration of Gov. John Hickenlooper on various public-safety matters. In its original form, the ad mentioned the case of Evan Ebel, who spent much of his sentence in solitary confinement before being released. Authorities say he killed former Corrections Director Tom Clements and Nathan Leon, who was working a second job delivering pizzas to support his family.

Clements’ widow, Lisa Clements, issued a statement Thursday asking Beauprez to stop using Clements’ death “for your personal and political gain.”

Afterward, Beauprez removed the reference to Clements’ death.
