ALABASTER, Ala. (AP) - A Birmingham police officer has been fired after being charged with sexually abusing a child and raping a woman.

Lt. Sean Edwards, a Birmingham police spokesman, said in a statement Friday that officer Joshua Herbinger “has been terminated.”

Police in Alabaster said earlier this month that 29-year-old Herbinger was charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12. He was later charged with first-degree rape in a case involving a woman.

Herbinger’s attorney, John Lentine, has said the officer is innocent. Herbinger served with the Birmingham Police Department for about nine years.
