OKATIE, S.C. (AP) - A highway construction worker has been killed in a hit and run in Beaufort County.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported (https://bit.ly/1wtGZEK) that 53-year-old Barry Asbury of Vance was struck and killed shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday on state Highway 170.

Asbury was working with a paving crew on the road in Okatie when he was struck by a car.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly says 27-year-old Nicole McGuire of Beaufort has been charged with leaving the scene of a wreck and felony driving under the influence resulting in a death.

It was not clear if McGuire has an attorney.

Sheriff P.J. Tanner says his deputies will work with the Highway Patrol to increase the law enforcement presence in construction areas.
