EASTON, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say a police chase in eastern Pennsylvania ended with the motorist crashing, officers opening fire and the driver slashing his own throat.

The Northampton County district attorney says it could take weeks to determine what killed Richard Scheuermann III.

The Express-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1wwWwWg ) police began pursuing Scheuermann early Friday morning after allegedly seeing him driving the wrong way on a road in Palmer Township.

Police say the 39-year-old motorist refused to stop, leading them on a 20-minute chase that ended when he crashed into a utility pole in Easton.

District Attorney John Morganelli says police pinned Scheuermann’s truck against the pole, but he allegedly reversed twice into a cruiser.

Morganelli says officers opened fire and hit Scheuermann at least once. Morganelli also says Scheuermann cut his own throat.
