BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A new drug treatment center is getting ready to open in Vermont.

On Friday, Gov. Peter Shumlin joined state and local officials from Bennington County in announcing that the Addiction Treatment Center of Southwestern Vermont is expected to begin accepting patients in Bennington early next year.

The center will be used to provide on-site treatment with the drug buprenorphine for people with opiate addictions.

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center CEO Thomas Dee says medical oversight will be provided through cooperation with the Hawthorne Recovery Center.

Vermont has been working for months to increase treatment options for people with heroin and opiate-based prescription drug addictions.
