SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah police say a fisherman helped authorities rescue a woman and her infant daughter after they plunged into the Moon River.

Savannah-Chatham County police said Friday the woman was waking with her baby on walkway beside a bridge when the infant fell from her stroller into the river about 3 feet below.

Police say a nearby fisherman dove into the water when he saw the baby fall Wednesday, only to realize the child’s mother had jumped in as well but couldn’t swim. The man put the baby on top of a crab trap and then got the woman to a pole she could hold onto until firefighters and police arrived with a rope.

The woman and her baby were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
