ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - Police in Elizabeth City are trying to determine how a student was able to drive a bus from an elementary school parking lot.

Multiple media outlets report a middle school student drove a bus parked at J.C. Sawyer Elementary School in Elizabeth City for a short distance after school hours on Tuesday. No one was injured and there was no damage to the bus.

Tammy Sawyer, spokeswoman for the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools, said the school system has 69 buses. Sawyer said some drivers take their buses home after the route and some park at the schools depending on the distances, adding that she didn’t know whether drivers are asked to remove the keys from the ignition

Sawyer said the student won’t be suspended but will face consequences.
