Bend, Ore. (AP) - A Redmond man who volunteered with the Bend Police Department is in custody in connection with the sexual abuse of an 8-year-old girl.

The Bend Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/1tacEfw ) Randy Moore faces charges of seven counts of first-degree sex abuse. He was arrested earlier this week by Redmond police.

Investigators say Moore, 41, began abusing the girl in May. Redmond officials credit a curriculum that teaches children about sexual abuse with leading to Moore’s arrest.

Moore had worked with the Bend Police Department since November 2011 as a mail courier. Bend Police on Friday said they have terminated Moore’s volunteer status. Police said background checks are required for all volunteers.

According to Bend Police, Moore’s position did not bring Moore in contact with children.
