PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) - Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi says deputies looking for a suspect in a rape investigation shot and killed the man when he aimed a gun at them in a rural area of the parish.

The man killed Friday evening was identified as 36-year-old Shaun Wilson Ramo.

Stassi told reporters deputies had been called to interview a woman at a nearby residence who accused Ramo of raping her.

Stassi said about 10 deputies were involved in a search for Ramo near a house where the woman directed them.

Nola.com/The Times-Picayune reported (https://bit.ly/1wyembs) that Stassi said deputies saw Ramo pop up from behind a wood pile and aim a shotgun at them. Stassi told The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1FNh1lK ) he was at the scene, speaking to Ramo’s mother, when he heard the shots.

The names of the deputies involved in the shooting were not released. It was unclear whether Ramo fired his weapon.

State police have been called to investigate the shooting.

Ramo had an outstanding warrant from Iberville Parish for improper telephone communication.

Neighbors described Ramo as a quiet but friendly man who had begun to turn his life around over the past year after struggling with an addiction to painkiller medication.

“He was doing so well,” said neighbor Betsy Berthelot, who said that Ramo had put on weight and looked healthy again. “I was so proud of him.”
