LANCASTER, Ohio (AP) - A southeast Ohio firearms instructor has been found guilty of a negligent assault charge.

Visiting Fairfield County Municipal Court Judge Teresa Liston fined Terry Dunlap Sr. $300 and court costs. Dunlap pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor count.

Dunlap was a certified concealed-carry instructor last year when he taught a class about handguns. Authorities said he was demonstrating when a handgun discharged, and a ricocheting bullet struck a student in the arm. The man was treated and released at a hospital.

The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette reported that a special prosecutor said authorities weren’t seeking jail time or restitution, since the victim got payments through insurance claims.

Dunlap is a Violet Township trustee.
