BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Leander “Russ” McDonald is the new president at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck.

McDonald is an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Tribe and former tribal chairman. He succeeds David Gipp, the president of the college for 37 years.

The 51-year-old McDonald is a former vice president of academic affairs at Cankdeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten. He has also taught and conducted research at the University of North Dakota.

McDonald earned graduate and post-graduate degrees from UND.

United Tribes board president Tex Hall says the college needs someone who is “tuned in” to the budget process and says McDonald stood out during candidate interviews.

The college celebrated its 45th anniversary in September.
