MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (AP) - Police in Mount Vernon say officers shot and wounded an emotionally disturbed man after he lunged at the officers with a knife and scissors.

The shooting happened Friday at the home of 31-year-old Anthony Smith.

Authorities tell The Journal News that officers fired nine shots at Smith after he ignored their commands.

The authorities say the officers shot Smith after trying unsuccessfully to subdue him with Tasers and pepper spray.

Police say Smith had a history of mental health issues.

They say he suffered wounds to his upper body and leg and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

No information on an attorney for Smith was available. Information on his condition also was not available Saturday.
