CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - The family of a Cranston, Rhode Island, teen murdered in 1984 while visiting her grandmother in San Diego is grateful that law enforcement officials never gave up on finding those responsible.

Police say new DNA evidence linked 67-year-old Ronald Tatro and 62-year-old Kevin Brown to the death of 14-year-old Claire Hough. Investigators say Brown, retired San Diego police criminalist, was found dead from an apparent suicide in San Diego county after being linked to the death. Tatro died in 2011 in a boating accident.

The case is now considered closed.

Claire’s father, Sam Hough, told WLNE-TV that he’s both “surprised and pleased” that San Diego police never gave up. Police say DNA technology not in existence in 1984 was key to solving the case.
