NORTH HERO, Vt. (AP) - Volunteers are being invited to attend Vermont’s annual fall spiny softshell turtle nesting beach work day.

This year’s event will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the North Hero State Park, but it may move to other locations after a couple of hours.

Fish & Wildlife biologist Steve Parren will have hatchling spiny softshell turtles in hand and he will talk about his long-term recovery efforts with the species.

The volunteers will pull up vegetation on nesting beaches to prepare turtle nesting sites for next spring. They may also find a few hatchlings that occasionally remain in nests underground this late in the year.

The beaches are also used by other turtle species.

Last year, dozens of people attended including many families with children.
