ERIE, Ill. (AP) - Two 16-year-old girls have died in a rural northwestern Illinois single-vehicle crash.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s office says the two girls were pronounced dead at the scene in rural Erie on Saturday night. Authorities say their vehicle flipped and landed in a drainage ditch before catching fire.

Officials say the girls were both from Erie but were not immediately identified.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Erie is about 30 miles northeast of the Quad Cities.
