CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A couple killed when they answered a knock on their door at their Lake Wylie home in South Carolina ran a mattress store in Charlotte where a robbery five months earlier ended with one of the suspect shot in the stomach, according to police.

But York County deputies won’t say if there is any link between the robbery and the shooting Thursday that killed Doug and Debbie London. They have said the shootings don’t appear to be random, but released little other information

The couple’s grown son, who family members said was asleep in another part of the house, found his parents’ bodies.

“It was like some bad movie, some bad TV show - someone knocks on their door and then kills them,” Steve Musgrove, a brother-in-law of Doug London, told The Charlotte Observer (https://bit.ly/1DPnevG ).

The Londons ran Wholesale Mattress Warehouse, and on May 25, three men came into the store and tried to rob them, police said.

Doug London was shot at twice, but the suspects missed. London shot one of the robbers in the stomach, and three suspects were charged, investigators said. Two of them remain in jail.

Neighbors remembered Doug London, 63, as an artist and golfer, and Debbie London, 61, as a caring, friendly person.

Deputies increased patrols in the Londons secluded neighborhood, but authorities said that is not uncommon after violent incidents.
