SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A three-year, $25 million project to lengthen the runway at the Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport is getting underway.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports (https://bit.ly/ZTfgCJ ) that the runway will be extended by another 1,700 feet, bringing its total length to about 6,000 feet. The taxi lane will also be lengthened.

The Federal Aviation Administration will pay 90 percent of the cost with the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission paying 5 percent and the city of Spartanburg paying the rest.

The airport recently received an initial grant of almost $8 million that will be used for site preparation work.
