PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A longtime critic of former Providence mayor Buddy Cianci has been arrested on an accusation he assaulted a female Cianci supporter at a mayoral forum.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1FPmskc ) that Pat Cortellessa of Cranston turned himself in on Sunday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police say the 58-year-old Cortellessa of Cranston was charged with simple assault in the incident alleged to have occurred last Wednesday.

Cortellessa had run-ins with Cianci and his administration over his real-estate investments in Providence and tried to run against him in 1998. His nomination papers were ruled insufficient.

Cortellessa does not have a listed phone number and it was not known Monday morning if he’s represented by a lawyer.
