BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - A couple accused of killing a 3-year-old girl and then fleeing their Bakersfield home for Mexico are back in Kern County.

Federal officials announced Sunday that 31-year-old Alberto Garcia and 30-year-old Carla Garcia had been brought back to the county by the FBI over the weekend.

They are both charged with first-degree murder in the 2010 death of Serenity Julia Gandara. She was found at the couple’s home along with her 4-year-old brother, Isaiah, who was asleep in a bedroom.

According to the Bakersfield Californian (https://bit.ly/1DTsjDj ), an autopsy determined Serenity died from massive blunt force trauma to her abdomen. She and her brother are the biological offspring of Alberto’s sister.

Authorities say the couple fled to Mexico after the girl’s death with their three children. They were arrested in 2012.
