SAN DIEGO (AP) - A young adult sea lion is recovering after getting hooked with a fisherman’s gaff off the San Diego County coast.

U-T San Diego says (https://bit.ly/1zdoj0C) the animal was discovered Sunday on the shoreline rocks at La Jolla Cove with the horseshoe-size hook in its back.

A team from Sea World managed to drape a loop net around the sea lion’s head and then administer a sedative.

After the 200-pound animal was calmed, the team used a small circular saw to cut the gaff close to the hook. Then a veterinarian was able to extract the hook.

Sea World spokesman Dave Koontz says the sea lion is eating and a full recovery is expected.

Koontz says the gaff’s pole was made out of bamboo and about 10 feet long.
