HOPE MILLS, N.C. (AP) - A Hope Mills police officer has shot and wounded a man who attacked him with a metal baseball bat during a traffic stop.

Police Chief Joel Acciardo told local media outlets that 29-year-old Marcus D. Campbell was charging at Officer Luis Munoz Sunday morning with a metal baseball bat when Munoz shot him.

Acciardo said neither man was seriously injured.

The police chief says Munoz had stopped Campbell during a traffic stop shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday. Acciardo said Campbell was combative during the traffic stop and Munoz fired his gun after a Taser had no effect.

The police chief said Campbell left in his vehicle but was stopped by other officers a short time later.

He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, Accidardo said.

Campbell has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer and failure to have a driver’s license.

It was not clear if Campbell has a lawyer.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.

Munoz has been with the Hope Mills Police Department since 2011.
