RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Crews have controlled a fire at an abandoned building in Rutland, Vermont, that is across the street from the local post office and had threatened surrounding homes.

Firefighters were called to the fire at about 3 a.m. Monday.

The Red Cross says three families from one home and an individual from another were evacuated; the families were allowed to return.

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
