LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces prisoner convicted of stabbing and slashing a fellow jail inmate in 2006 has been sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Dominic Montoya waived his right to be physically present at his sentencing Monday and participated telephonically.

The 38-year-old Montoya already was serving a 57½ year sentence for prior convictions, one of which was a 1999 murder in Albuquerque in which he pleaded guilty.

Montoya was convicted in June of second-degree murder in the April 2006 killing of Adam Avalos, who had his right ear cut off.

Montoya claimed insanity and said he experienced a blackout of the entire event.

Prosecutors say Montoya will serve the 26-year prison term in the Avalos case after completing all prior sentences.
