WESTLAND, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have arraigned a 38-year-old man on a first-degree murder charge in the slaying of a suburban Detroit woman.

Jamie Pearson was arraigned Sunday in Wayne County court in the killing of 30-year-old Rachel Watson of Westland. He was ordered held in Wayne County jail without bond.

Authorities say Pearson strangled Watson. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office tells MLive.com that Watson had signs of bruising and trauma around her neck, and ruptured blood vessels in her eyes.

Police say Watson’s body was found Thursday just after midnight in the basement of her Westland home. They say family members went to check on her after she didn’t go to work as expected.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Pearson has an attorney.
