MIAMI (AP) - A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a Miami police detective.

A Miami-Dade judge handed down the mandatory sentence Monday for 27-year-old Andrew “Birdman” Rolle. A jury found him guilty earlier this month of first-degree murder in the 2008 slaying of Miami Detective James Walker

Prosecutors say Rolle was looking to avenge a rival who had stolen a gun. After firing into the street, Rolle ran to his get-away car, but the driver had left. Instead, Detective Walker drove up, coincidentally in the same type of car.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/Dlxr4t) reports that when Rolle tried to get into what he thought was his getaway car, the detective pulled out his gun. Prosecutors say Rolle shot the detective using an AK-47.

The defense said no forensic evidence linked Rolle to the crime scene.
