CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (AP) - The Coast Guard says the captain of a fishing boat has been found dead while scuba diving.

Petty Office Nate Littlejohn told local media outlets that the Coast Guard was notified Saturday night that a man was found unresponsive in the water beside his boat 55 miles southeast of Cape Fear.

Littlejohn said the first mate of the Cheerio Lady out of Carolina Beach said the captain was floating face-down in the water with his scuba equipment on and the sailor could not get him turned over.

A U.S. Navy warship in the area sent a helicopter that flew the victim to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Coast Guard said the victim was Caleb James Batson of Carolina Beach.
