MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Students at one metro Atlanta college are gearing up for a pumpkin catapulting competition meant to test their engineering skills.

Officials at Southern Polytechnic State University say the fifth annual pumpkin hurling contest is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Officials say students will use human or gravity-powered inventions to catapult large pumpkins nearly 100 feet. Organizers say the goal is for students to hit a small paper plate target.

Organizers say awards will be given for the most accurate hit, best distance and best decoration.
