NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal says a teenage inmate committed suicide in a parish jail cell.

Ackal tells The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1rvly1N ) the inmate, a 16-year-old boy, was found hanged in his cell after a routine check at about 11:53 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff says the inmate was taken to a hospital by Acadian Ambulance but was later pronounced dead by medical staff.

The teenager was held in the Iberia Parish Jail after being indicted Sept. 4 by an Iberia Parish grand jury for rape. He was to be tried as an adult. The incident involving the rape occurred on July 31.

Authorities have not released the inmate’s name.
