BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A South Texas woman who bought five assault rifles has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after being convicted of lying on the purchase records.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Yadira Garcia of Alamo was sentenced Monday in Brownsville after being convicted in July of six counts of making false statements on firearm records. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison on each count. The sentences will run concurrently.

Prosecutors say that in August 2013, Garcia bought five assault rifles over six days from dealers in Harlingen and McAllen, paying more than $5,000 in cash.

Garcia admitted purchasing the rifles and claimed she had done so using bingo winnings. But she gave inconsistent statements about the whereabouts of the firearms. She admitted lying about her address on purchase records.
