LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - The trial has started for an Amarillo plastic surgeon accused in a murder-for-hire plot to kill a Lubbock pathologist who was dating his former girlfriend.

The capital murder trial of Dr. Thomas Dixon began Monday in Lubbock. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (https://bit.ly/1wCzhbq ) reports that prosecutor Sunshine Stanek said the slaying of Dr. Joseph Sonnier was a case of love, jealousy, arrogance, wealth and rage.

Dixon is accused of hiring his business partner, David Neal Shepard, to kill Sonnier in July 2012 at Sonnier’s Lubbock home.

The defense told the jury Shepard had a “soldier of fortune psychosis” and acted without Dixon’s help or knowledge. Shepard is serving life in prison without parole as part of a plea deal.
