MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Thirty five states have applied for $250 million worth of federal grants for preschool education, but Wisconsin is not one of them.

Wisconsin did not apply by Friday’s deadline to qualify for up to $60 million in grants over four years. Democratic critics of Republican Gov. Scott Walker had pushed the governor to apply.

His spokeswoman last week said the governor was deferring to the guidance of leaders at the departments of Public Instruction and Children and Families in deciding not to seek the money.

Emails obtained by The Associated Press showed that policy analysts in DPI and the governor’s office expressed concerns about being able to apply for and administer the grant.

The U.S. Department of Education released the 35 states that sought the grants on Monday.
